Police Officer Hiring Process

  • Make sure you meet all the ?qualifications before applying
  • Sign up for the civil service exam, link posted when exam date has been announced.
  • Prepare for the test
  • Prepare for the physical agility test
  • Download and start working on the personal history packet ahead of time.
  • Save the personal history packet to your computer so that you can work on it off-line. 
  • Order a copy of your credit report
  • Obtain all necessary documents required for (PHS)
  • Show up on time for the test date prepared. 
  • If you pass both the written and physical agility test, you will be given a due date to submit the personal history packet to the Human Resource Department. 
  • Packet are due by 12:00 p.m. (noon) on the designated due date.  Failure to submit the Personal History Statement by the designated date and time will disqualify you from the eligibility list. 
  • After your Personal History Statement is received, it will be reviewed by Human Resource personnel. If you do not meet the minimum qualifications, you will be sent a letter stating your do not qualify. 
  • If at any point during the hiring process that you do not pass or you are disqualified, you will receive a letter from Human Resources advising you have been removed from the process. 
  • Once the police department receives the background packet, it is reviewed and you will be contacted for the oral board.  The oral board’s is typically given Monday – Thursday between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  
  • The oral board consists of a Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, and two Officers. 
  • Dress appropriately (business attire) 
  • Upon successfully passing the Oral Board, your Personal History Statement will be assigned to a background investigator who will contact you to set up an initial interview.   
  • All background investigators attempt to work with the schedules of applicants, but if you are unavailable or unable to make the initial interview, you will be removed from the process. Background investigator usually works Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 
  • The background investigation process takes on average 3-4 weeks to complete. 
  • After the background investigation is complete, you will be scheduled for a polygraph. 
  • Once you pass the polygraph, you will be scheduled for a physiological test and interview. Prior to the Psychological Exam, a conditional offer of employment will be presented to you.   
  • Upon successfully passing the Psychological Exam, you will be scheduled for an occupational physical and drug screen.
  • The average time to complete the hiring process is 4-6 months from the Civil Service test date. There are factors which affect the date on which you will be called for an Oral Board such as (1) Position on the eligibility list, and (2) Number of open positions.
